Sugar City Con is dedicated to bringing pop culture to the cane fields, providing an avenue for locals to have access to industry professionals across the gaming, comic book, publishing, and anime industries. Cosplay (costumed play) is one of the highlights of pop culture conventions, with attendees having the opportunity to dress-up as their favourite pop culture character. From people dressing up to have fun, to professional cosplayers, Sugar City Con is the place to go to see an amazing array of people in costume.
Sugar City Con was started in 2014 by a dedicated group of pop culture lovers who wanted to bring a pop culture event to Mackay. With a committee of volunteers giving their time to plan and deliver the event, the not-for-profit committee has delivered two successful conventions that have grown each time.
In 2014, no one expected 1200 people to converge on the PCYC. This was a phenomenal number of attendees, and the event was a great success. In 2015, Sugar City Con had international guests for the first time, including female comic book pioneer, Becky Cloonan, who had never been to an Australia before.
Sugar City Con has achieved a lot in two years, and is looking forward to another great year in 2016. The event is still not-for-profit, and solely run by volunteers. Community support is the only way that this event will continue into the future.
